WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A UK STATE AND PRIVATE EDUCATION?
There are many differences between a UK state, private and international education:
A UK state education is non-fee paying. Private and international schools charge fees.
The fees that private and international schools charge vary from school to school and also between schools in different parts of the country, e.g. in general school fees in London would be more expensive than in more northern cities. Annual school fees for younger pupils may well be less than for older pupils who are nearing major exams at ages 16 and 18.
In addition to school fees, parents of children at private schools would be expected pay for uniforms, books and extracurricular activities.
In private and international schools, there are usually fewer pupils per classroom, i.e. a higher teacher:pupil ratio.
Private and international schools tend to offer the International Baccalaureate and/or AP curricula rather than the UK national curriculum (GCSEs and A’’levels).
Average UK private school fees per child / per year are between £15,000 and £30,000. ☆
NB: from January 2025, the UK government will be adding VAT @ 20% on to the cost of current school fees.
☆ Please check each school’s website for further details of fees.
